Recommended Prerequisite Courses

The courses below are recommended for persons who do not have prior fundamental radio frequency (RF) and fiber optic systems knowledge. Completing these courses will provide the individual with the foundational knowledge of RF and fiber optic technologies. If individuals have prior knowledge of this material, they will not need to complete these courses.

Understanding Cable Technology (UCT)

In addition to learning about the core hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) and fiber to the x (FTTx) architecture, participants will learn about the technologies used to deliver high-speed data (HSD), video services, voice over IP (VoIP) telephony, and networking the customer premises. (estimated duration: 12 hours)

RF System Theory

This interactive course is designed to ensure learners record proper RF signal levels and verify RF quality within the various upstream and downstream portions of the cable network. (estimated duration: 12 hours)

Electrical Fundamentals

The Electrical Fundamentals course offers learners a general understanding of the key elements, concepts and terminology used around electrical components in a telecommunication network. Learners will practice electrical safety, recognize electrical math and operate tools used to assess electrical health in the network. (estimated duration: 12 hours)

Fundamental

These courses will provide the required foundational knowledge and principles behind RF and fiber optic network construction. The courses in this section will assist outside plant technicians in learning about several aspects of fundamental access network subjects.

Coax Construction

The Coax Construction course draws upon SCTE’s Recommended Practices for Coaxial Construction and Testing. Topics include system design, coaxial cable connectorization, powering, aerial and underground coaxial cable construction, activation and testing, and relevant field safety topics. (estimated duration: 9 hours)

Coax Construction is one of several courses that prepares you for SCTE's CEP certification.

Return Path

The Return Path course focuses on design, set-up and troubleshooting of the reverse system in cable networks. (estimated duration: 24 hours)

Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM)

The Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) course prepares broadband professionals to better understand the elements and implementations of the multiple tools and techniques inside of the PNM tool kit. (estimated duration: 16 hours)

Advanced

These courses explain the advanced principles behind the maintenance and construction of access networks and their importance. The advanced courses are recommended for construction employees with a fundamental knowledge of the access network.

Learners are advised to complete the foundational courses or are knowledgeable in areas such as but not limited to Coax Construction, Optical Fiber Construction, and Fiber Restoration before enrolling in an advanced journey.

Digital Telecommunication Network Fundamentals

Digital Telecommunication Network Fundamentals course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of digital video fundamentals and digital troubleshooting recommended practices. (estimated duration: 16 hours)

Broadband Distribution Specialist (BDS) Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to equip you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to excel when working on the coaxial portion of the access network. This comprehensive training program provides a deep understanding of the components and functionalities of broadband distribution systems. (estimated duration: 22 hours)

Broadband Distribution Specialist also prepares you for SCTE's BDS certification.

Distributed Access Architecture (DAA)

The distributed access architecture essentials course covers the evolution of the hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) access network to accommodate higher bandwidth. The course provides the essential knowledge for learners in remote PHY and remote MAC/PHY architectures. (estimated duration: 10 hours)

DOCSIS® 4.0

This course provides learners with essential knowledge about the changes in the physical layer, Mac layer, and security changes introduced by the 4.0 specification. (estimated duration: 10 hours)

Expert

These courses are intended to provide veteran outside plant technicians with advanced technical skills supporting the coaxial and fiber optic access networks and the theories associated with them. The expert-level courses are recommended for employees who have a comprehensive knowledge of the access network.

Learners are advised to complete fundamental and advanced coursework such as but not limited to Broadband Distribution Specialist, Construction Inspection Specialist, and Distributed Access Architecture and/or have extensive experience before enrolling in an expert journey.

Broadband Fiber Transport Specialist (BFTS) Curriculum

The SCTE Broadband Fiber Transport Specialist (BFTS) curriculum covers many aspects of optical signal distribution in the access and transport network architectures. A learner will gain an in-depth understanding of fiber optic light theory, optical transport technologies, and optical cables. This knowledge will be leveraged in learning about the basic principles of designing, constructing, maintaining, and troubleshooting these networks.

Broadband Fiber Transport Specialist also prepares you for SCTE's BFTS certification.

Construction Engineering Professional

The goal of the “Construction Engineering” course is to help the outside plant engineer understand and comprehend the pitfalls that could delay a construction project. (estimated duration: 4 hours)

Construction Engineering Professional is one of several courses that prepares you for SCTE's CEP certification.

Broadband TelecomCenter Specialist (BTCS) Curriculum

The Broadband Telecom Center Specialist (BTCS) Curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of a headend technician's facility, the services and signal that flows throughout the facility, and the optical transport that delivers the broadcast to the customer premise. (estimated duration: 32 hours)

The Broadband TelecomCenter Specialist Curriculum also prepares you for SCTE's BTCS certification.

Linux Essentials (Linux Professional Institute)

The course provides the fundamentals of the Linux operating system and the command line. It provides a “starting place” for learning the Linux operating system. (estimated duration: 70 hours)

PCAP - Programming Essentials in Python

In the course you will learn to design, write, debug, and run programs encoded in the Python language using an integrated Sandbox for hands-on. No prior programming knowledge is required! (estimated duration: 75 hours)
